In ancient roman culture, the visual depiction of Medusa’s severed head- known as the Gorgoneion- was deeply embedded in roman daily life as an apotropaic device ( a charm intended to ward off evil and the evil eye). Because her severed head was used by Arhena as a weapon, it was believed to hold immense power against bad luck. As a result the head of Medusa was frequently utilized as a protective motif across the Roman Empire.
